Sketching & Drawing

with Robert Plante

Students will learn about sketching and drawing using perspective, shading, line and composition. We will be using pencil, ink and maybe oil pastel.

Ages: 13-99

Watercolor Magic

with Josslyn Meyers (BFA, B.ED)

Focusing on mastering the transparent washes and glazes in watercolor painting, this class will also explore composition and color theory as you work on a subject of your choice.

Dates: Tuesdays February 5-26th
Time: 6:30pm - 9:30pm

Other Dates: March 5th-26th , April 2, 9, 16, 23

Cost: $90, material fee $15

Material list if required for class: A basic watercolor set with brushes and paper set of watercolors - cadmium yellow light, cadmium red, rose madder, cerulean blue, ultramarine blue, paynes grey, yellow ochre, raw sienna, burnt umber, Chinese white. Brushes - watercolor synthetic set, four sheets of 140 lb. watercolor paper, board for painting upon, tape. Student watercolour paper will be available for purchase


The Art of Walking: A mini group residency

With Lacey McRae Williams

A series of four themed walks in varied landscapes of Ladysmith & District will encourage the 'walker' to pay attention to their immediate environment in a way they have never before. Gently curated, the group will reference poetry, storytelling, archival photos and even silent meditation and explore ways of making through collection, sketching, photography, etc. Bring any tools you wish to assist you on your creative endeavor. The walks will be 1.5 to 2 hours in length followed by a 1 hour studio session in the classroom at the Ladysmith Arts Centre.

Next generation printmaking: Pochoir

Pochoir is the art of creating stencils. Join Lottie as the group creates shapes and forms which will be inked, layered onto paper and passed through the press. Oh the magic we will witness!

Bookbinding with Coptic and French Lace

with Carolynn Dallaire

Create a beautiful hand bound journal constructed from book boards covered with beautiful decorative paper and a book block with 128 pages of 90 to 100 pound drawing paper.
The book will be sewn together using waxed linen thread and the historical coptic and kettle stitching as well as a french lace stitching. Both of these stitching styles are beautiful and very strong.

Material fee per person: $15 paid to instructor

Material: metal ruler, pencil, eraser, scissors. Optional: cutting mat, exacto knife, awl, bone folder. If you don’t have these supplies, don’t buy any as the instructor has lots to share


Playful Letters

with Carolynn Dallaire

Over four weeks, enjoy making beautiful letters that will enhance any card, envelope, document, poster and art piece. Using a fine liner, we will learn several distinctive monoline alphabets that are easy to make and look fine on the page.
Enjoy some contemporary lettering in a relaxed atmosphere!

Printmaking Workshop

Fabric Painting

Join Cowichan Valley based painter and textile designer, Pipi Tustian for a 1 day workshop on fabric painting. Learn mixing paints with medium, important tips on preparing fabric and a quick breakdown of her pattern building techniques.

Carousel Book

Create a unique gift to give to someone or a fun way to document a vacation, special event or a collage art piece!

Constructed using decorative paper, book boards and ribbon for the cover and card stock for the inside, Carolynn will be teaching you how to make a carousel (or star) book that will open to 360 degrees displaying your work.
During this two day class, we will make seven 3 dimensional scenes, based on the theme you have chosen.
Decide ahead of time what theme you’d like to explore for your book. Bring quotes, photos (or photocopies) and any other ‘things’ that would relate to your theme.

Pointed Brush Writing

Pointed brush lettering is a wonderful contemporary form of handwriting. Using a round brush and watercolors, we will focus on the lower case letters of the alphabet during the first two mornings of the class followed by exploring capitals and project or two during the last two sessions. Learn to make thick and thin strokes and experiment with various forms of lettering.

12" x 12 " frame (not provided) (background card stock is provided) All pieces will be pre-cut and ready for you to stamp and assemble!  
Some adhesive will be provided, but please plan to bring your favorite adhesive for your personal use.

Kids will discover the rich world of creative design through exploration of geometric and organic shapes while being inspired by the art of Ireland, North America and India, countries rich in color! Explore using various materials, stories and artists in history and practice your skills in drawing, painting, printmaking, collage and sculpture.
