GET THE JOB - creating a portfolio that stands out

Instructor: Kara Harrison This workshop is intended for anyone, of any age, who wishes to find work in an art based industry by building a strong portfolio and application. Students and young artists are encouraged to attend, as well as people who want to work a reception or administrative job in the art industry.

A professional portfolio is the first step to finding work in the art world. As one of the people responsible for hiring in the tattoo shop where I work, I have seen my fair share of resumes, applications, and portfolios, and can help you learn to present yourself in a way that makes you stand out from the crowd.

In this workshop you will learn what hiring managers are looking for, what will get you noticed, and how to avoid the common mistakes that earn your application a one way trip to the trash pile. We will spend time working on your resume, cover letter, artist’s CV, and organizing your portfolio to make a great first impression. There will also be an opportunity to get your questions about the industry answered.

About me.

My name is Kara Dee Harrison, and I am a full time paid artist. I have worked at Tranceformations Tattoo and Body Piercing in Nanaimo for over 5 years. I am currently completing a three year tattoo apprenticeship. I am also represented by Gallery Merrick.

carousel book.JPG

The carousel, or star, book is a lovely way to document a life story, family history, a special event, a vacation, a favourite place, a friend chronicle, a collage art piece and many other themes.

The shell of the book will be already constructed ... using decorative paper, book boards and ribbon for the cover and card stock for the inside seven signatures. Then, the fun begins. During this two day class, we will make seven 3 dimensional scenes, based on the theme you have chosen. When these scenes are completed they will be glued (with double stick tape) into the book. When the book is completed, it will open to 360 degrees displaying the work you have created. Materials to construct the 3D pages, as well as tape and a few other goodies, will be provided.

Decide ahead of time what theme you’d like to explore for your book. Bring quotes, photos (or photocopies) and any other ‘things’ that would relate to your theme.

artist journal.jpg

This colourful 64 page journal, with some altered pages, is a fun, straight-forward project to make. The covers are a heavy, but foldable, paper. The inside pages are made from a large piece of light water colour paper, Arches text wove, that will be already decorated on both sides with a colourful watercolour wash. We will ‘tear’ down the large paper into a usable page size..... then sew the cover and pages together using a french lace sewing style. The book, measuring 5” wide by 6 1/2” tall, is sturdy yet flexible, colourful and most enjoyable to fill. A decorative button is often sewn on the front cover for decoration. After the book is assembled, pages can be altered if desired..... just another feature that adds appeal and mystery to this journal.
