Jillian Player
Jillian Player was born in south India and came to Canada at the age of two. She was raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba and has resided in Victoria, British Columbia since 1987. She has been creating art all her life and after raising two children she completed her formal art education in 2010 with a Post-Diploma in Fine Arts with a focus in painting and video installation from the Vancouver Island School of Art.
Her inspiration comes from the land, animals and seas of Vancouver Island which she translates through the mediums of oil painting, video and installation.
Process
My recent work has been directly related to the awesome beauty of Vancouver Island and the ocean around it. I want to capture the mystery of the land and the quiet understanding we have as caretakers of this jewel.
I am drawn to contrasts and seek out juxtapositions. What excite me are the contrasts in darks and lights, the sharp lines of man-made structures versus the organic landscape and abstract combined with reality.

Sherry Bezanson
If I were to appease the goddesses of service and completely give up my day job as a social entrepreneur, I would love to make my living doing mixed media, collage and fabric arts. That would put a smile on my face. Combining west coast imagery, such as the sea, boats, and visages of marine life enthuses me and inform’s my art. I get lost in this form of creative work and hours can go by as I interface with words, fabric, pictures, photos – all creating a new story in a non-linear way. Upcycling with fabric is also a transformative experience for me…imagining new ways to recreate old fashion items. I began this work in 1990 and it has evolved with my own experiences and time away from the desktop. A lot of my creative juices are also squeezed out in the form of words – I write poetry, do creative journaling, write professional and creative articles, and technical manuals.

Biography - painter
To me, art is a joy-filled, mysterious, soul satisfying endeavour. It brings me great happiness, plays a central role in your spiritual development and inspires me to move forward.
I began painting in 2000, am eclectic in my tastes and like vivid colours. Working mostly in acrylics, I also enjoy pastels, mono-prints and have tiptoes toward watercolours. As I evolve as a painter, I am always in awe of the endless power of the creative spirit that I feel within.
As on of the founding members of the Ladysmith Arts Council, I am encouraged that Ladysmith has this gallery space and hope our growing artistic community has the opportunity to flourish and expand in the future.
