The Waiting Room Gallery is sponsored by the artists of the Arts Council of Ladysmith and District
It is well known that art affects the health of people whether it be visual art, music or dance. Hopefully those waiting to see a medical professional will enjoy the art and it will stimulate and help in the recovery of the patient.

Now Showing in the waiting room gallery:
Elly resides in North Cowichan. Born in the Netherlands and immigrating with her family to Canada as a very young child, it was apparent that she would be “an artist” in grade 2, with a very detailed drawing in colour of Samuel Champlain canoeing down the river with the natives of the region, that stunned her teacher and drew the attention of the principal. As a teenager, with the added encouragement from lessons at the Vancouver School of Art (now, Emily Carr) oils became her medium of preference.
Her work from high school was award-winning and one piece became part of a Children's Art Exhibit
hosted by the Japanese Govt.
Mostly self-taught, as there was no finances for further education, there was always something new
to explore, some technique to master and more subject matter that inspired. The beauty of details,
light and shadow and the subtle nuances of colour became the focus of her very realistic paintings.
She specialized in portraiture and taught classes in Art Clubs and in adult night classes for a number
Her main body of work reflects her travels around the world that include Thailand, Cuba, Honduras,
the USA and of course, cross-country Canada.
She is also a cartoonist with regular editorial cartoons in 3 newspapers in the Cowichan Valley and
one in Lloydminster, AB/SK. She has independently published 5 books, which are for sale locally.
Recently she has delved into photography and computer technique to turn her photos into art prints.
Her paintings hang in homes in Canada, The Netherlands and Shanghai.
